How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost? A Straight Answer

One of the first questions people ask us is: "What is this going to cost me?" It is a fair question, and we will give you a straight answer — no vague ranges, no bait-and-switch.

The honest truth is that stump grinding is more affordable than most homeowners expect. Here is what drives the price.

This is the biggest factor. Most contractors price by the inch — measuring the diameter of the stump at ground level. A small 10-inch stump costs significantly less than a 36-inch oak. The wider the stump, the more time and machine passes it takes.

Multiple stumps on one property are almost always cheaper per stump than a single-stump job. We are already there with the equipment — it makes sense to knock them all out at once. If you have more than one stump, always ask about a multi-stump rate.

Some trees have shallow, spreading root systems that are easy to grind through. Others — like silver maple or cottonwood — have aggressive surface roots that extend well beyond the stump itself. If you want those ground down too, that adds time and cost.

Is the stump in an open backyard we can drive right up to? Or is it behind a fence, on a slope, or in a tight space that requires hand-carrying equipment? Difficult access takes more time and may affect the price.

After grinding, you are left with a pile of wood chips. We can leave them for you to use as mulch — free of charge — or haul them away for a small additional fee. Most customers keep the chips.

Standard grinding goes 6 to 12 inches below grade, which is plenty for reseeding or laying sod. If you need it deeper for a patio, driveway, or construction project, that adds a bit more time.

A few things to keep in mind when comparing quotes:

• Lowball quotes sometimes exclude debris cleanup or charge extra for anything beyond the bare minimum. Ask what is included.
• Per-inch pricing is common and fair — just make sure you know what measurement they are using.
• Travel fees can add up if a company is coming from far away. We are local to Naperville, so that is not an issue for most of our customers.
