How Long Does Stump Grinding Take? What to Expect

One of the most common questions we get before a job is: "How long is this going to take?" It is a fair question — you want to know if you need to clear your schedule or if this is a quick in-and-out visit.

The short answer: most stump grinding jobs take between 30 minutes and 2 hours, start to finish. Here is what affects that timeline.

This is the biggest factor. A small stump from a decorative tree might take 20 minutes. A massive oak stump that is 3 feet across could take an hour or more on its own. The wider and deeper the stump, the more passes the grinder needs to make.

Got more than one? Each stump adds time. That said, doing multiple stumps in one visit is always more efficient than separate trips — and usually saves you money too.

Hardwoods like oak, maple, and elm take longer to grind than softer woods like pine or poplar. Older, more decayed stumps are actually easier to grind through.

If the stump is in an open backyard, we can get the machine right up to it quickly. If it is behind a fence, on a slope, or in a tight space, setup takes a bit longer. We always assess access before quoting so there are no surprises.

Standard grinding goes 6 to 12 inches below grade — enough to reseed or lay sod over. If you need it deeper for a patio or construction project, that adds time.

Here is what a standard single-stump job looks like from the time we pull up:

• Arrive and assess: 5–10 minutes
• Set up equipment: 5–10 minutes
• Grind the stump: 20–45 minutes (varies by size)
• Clean up chips and debris: 10–15 minutes
• Done: You are left with a clean, level area

Total: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours for most single-stump jobs.

Not necessarily. As long as we have access to the stump and know where to leave the wood chips (or haul them away), we can complete the job without you present. We will send you a before-and-after update when we are done.

Once the stump is ground down, you will have a pile of wood chips and a shallow depression in the ground. You can:

• Use the chips as mulch around flower beds or trees
• Have us haul them away for a cleaner finish
• Fill the depression with topsoil and reseed for a seamless lawn
